Mixed Doubles Badminton World Cup: Thom Gicquel and Delphine Delrue triumph in semifinals, securing bronze medal victory
In the ongoing 2021 World Badminton Championships, the French mixed doubles team of Thom Gicquel and Delphine Delrue have made a significant impact. The duo, who are six-time French champions and ranked 8th in the world, qualified for the semifinals of the mixed doubles event.
Their semifinal match was a thrilling encounter against their compatriots Guo Xinwa and Chen Fanghui. Despite a valiant effort from the Chinese pair, Gicquel and Delrue emerged victorious, securing their place in the final four.
However, the final match was not to be theirs. The French pair faced the Malaysian pair Tang Jie Chen-Ee Wei Toh, who are ranked four places above them. The final score was 18-21, 16-21 in favour of Tang Jie Chen-Ee Wei Toh.
Despite this loss, Gicquel and Delrue should be proud of their achievement. They had previously defeated the Chinese pair Cheng Xing and Zhang Chi to reach the semifinals and went on to win the bronze medal on August 30. This is their second World Championship medal, a significant addition to their impressive career.
The Malaysian pair will now face the Chinese pair Wei Yaxin and Jiang Zhenbang, who are aiming for the gold medal. Wei Yaxin and Jiang Zhenbang, ranked as the world number 2, won their semifinal match.
The mixed doubles event final was held at the Adidas Arena in Paris, a fitting venue for the French pair's bronze medal win. Gicquel and Delrue have moved on from their Olympic disappointment last year, where they were eliminated in the group stage at home.
The French pair, both 26 years old, had also won the Super 1000 event in Indonesia in June, equivalent to a Grand Slam in tennis. This victory further showcases their prowess in the sport.
France has only won one world medal in badminton history, Pi Hongyan's bronze in the women's singles in 2009. With Gicquel and Delrue's recent success, there is hope that this could change in the future.
The final match for the mixed doubles event is scheduled for Sunday, where Wei Yaxin and Jiang Zhenbang will try to win the gold medal. Gicquel and Delrue can take pride in their bronze medal win and look forward to future competitions.
