Modern sports complex, Asbachhalle in Oberasbach, now open - comes with a high price tag
In the heart of Oberasbach, the Hans-Reif Sports Center is preparing for a significant addition. The Asbach Hall, a three-court sports hall, is set to open its doors on September 19, 2025. This modern, energy-efficient infrastructure promises to cater to a wide range of uses, serving schools, clubs, and the adult education center, and covering sporting diversity and school needs.
However, the Asbach Hall has been a significant burden on Oberasbachโs budget in the long term. The initial budget for the project was set at 12 million euros in 2017, but the total expenditure has reached approximately 20.2 million euros โ a 70% increase. The general increase in construction prices, additional charges of over 1.4 million euros, and further disputed claims have contributed to the cost overrun. The Baugesellschaft Asbach, under the leadership of the then mayor, is responsible for this significant cost overrun.
The city's budget for 2025 shows a double-digit million deficit, and starting September 1, 2025, Oberasbach will introduce usage fees for sports facilities, including the Asbach Hall. These fees, however, will be well below the actual operating costs. By 2028, Oberasbachโs debt could grow to 50 million euros due to the Asbach Hall project, with annual interest and repayment costs expected to reach 4.5 million euros.
Experts have pointed to structural problems as contributors to the financial strain in Oberasbach. Declining key allocations, increasing district contributions, and growing personnel and operating costs have been exacerbating the financial situation for years. Despite these challenges, the Asbach Hall remains a symbol of municipal investments for the future.
The inauguration of the Asbach Hall will take place from 3 PM onwards. The construction of the hall is largely completed, with the shell, facade, building services, interior fit-out, sports flooring, stands, changing rooms, and sanitary facilities finished. The Asbach Hall is considered the largest sports infrastructure project in the city for several decades.
As the city prepares for the opening of the Asbach Hall, it also looks towards the future, hoping that this investment will bring about a renewed sense of community and opportunities for its residents.
