In the world of audio technology, Monika Smetona's name is making waves. As the president of Californian company Renkus-Heinz, she's leading the charge in the industry, navigating both challenges and exciting opportunities.

Smetona, the daughter of the company's founder, Harro Heinz, joined Renkus-Heinz in 2022. Her journey began with a degree in Finance and HR, which she earned in 2019. Before taking the helm, she honed her skills in similar roles for many years in the motorcycle industry.

One of the first challenges Smetona faced was the logistical problems caused by President Trump's tariffs on products from China. These issues affected the supplies of Renkus-Heinz, a company known for its high-quality audio solutions.

Despite these hurdles, Smetona remains undeterred. She's excited about the imminent development of a new Renkus-Heinz 3D sound system, a testament to her commitment to pushing the boundaries of audio technology.

Smetona's leadership style is unique. She found her own approach by showing empathy and valuing personal relationships. This approach, combined with her technical knowledge, has earned her respect within the company.

Ralph Heinz, Smetona's brother and the CTO of Renkus-Heinz, works closely with her. Heinz, who studied engineering and worked for NASA before joining the company, designed a method of arraying loudspeakers for better phase coherency in 1994. He also patented a multiple driver horn in 1996.

Smetona initially tried to change her personality to appear strong and successful, but she later realised it didn't fit her style. Instead, she embraced her authentic self, a decision that has resonated with her team.

The company, which has seen its highest sales to date in 2024, is looking at manufacturing some products in Europe in the future. This move is part of a strategic plan to expand Renkus-Heinz's global footprint.

Monika Smetona's family, often referred to as "The Brady Bunch" due to its size and composition, plays a significant role in her life. She spends a month each year at their "forever home", a 40-acre ranch in Utah, where her daughter, Sarah, also lives. Smetona grew up speaking German before she knew English and returned to Germany every summer until she was a teenager.

Despite her impressive title, Smetona remains grounded. She's not impressed by titles and finds her daughters' excitement about her presidential role amusing. Managing the company during the Covid-19 pandemic, with its associated layoffs, has been the most difficult part of her role.

Yet, Smetona faces these challenges with the same determination and grace that has defined her leadership. She continues to steer Renkus-Heinz towards a future filled with innovation and success.
