"Moral approval": Sa'ar commends Rubio's sanctions on Palestinian NGOs linked to the ICC
The United States has taken a firm stance against the International Criminal Court (ICC) by imposing sanctions on several of its judges, prosecutors, and Palestinian Arab NGOs. The sanctions were announced by US Secretary of State Marco Rubio and are part of a broader US policy of opposing the ICC's actions against Israel and US personnel.
Last June, the Trump administration sanctioned four ICC judges, including Kimberly Prost of Canada and Nicolas Guillou of France, along with deputy prosecutors Nazhat Shameem Khan of Fiji and Mame Mandiaye Niang of Senegal. These officials were accused of investigating and prosecuting nationals of the United States and Israel without consent. The sanctions freeze the US assets of the targeted individuals and impose visa restrictions.
The US also sanctioned ICC Chief Prosecutor Karim Khan, who was added to the Specially Designated Nationals and Blocked Persons List earlier. The sanctions against the ICC judges are in response to the court's investigation and indictment of Israeli officials, including Prime Minister Netanyahu, for alleged war crimes in Gaza.
In addition to the judicial sanctions, the US Secretary of State also announced sanctions against Palestinian Arab NGOs: Al Haq, Al Mezan Center for Human Rights, and the Palestinian Centre for Human Rights. Rubio stated that these NGOs were accused of directly engaging in the ICC's targeting of Israel.
Foreign Minister Gideon Sa'ar thanked Secretary Rubio for the sanctions, stating that the ICC has been aiding in a politicized crusade against Israel. Sa'ar also mentioned that the ICC trampled principles of international law in its actions.
The court issued arrest warrants for Netanyahu and former Defense Minister Yoav Gallant last November. The other two sanctioned judges authorized an ICC investigation into abuses by US personnel in Afghanistan.
The US administration will actively oppose actions that threaten national interests and infringe on sovereignty, including that of Israel. The ongoing actions of the ICC set a dangerous precedent for all nations, according to Rubio. The US has taken active steps to oppose the ICC, including sanctions, due to its perceived politicized agenda and overreach.
The US sanctions are not the first in this matter. Last month, the US administration imposed sanctions on several judges and prosecutors of the International Criminal Court (ICC) for their involvement in investigating and prosecuting nationals of the United States and Israel without consent.
The US's actions demonstrate its commitment to opposing actions that threaten national interests and infringe on sovereignty, including that of Israel. The sanctions against the ICC judges and NGOs are part of this commitment and are intended to send a clear message to the ICC about the US's stance on its perceived politicized agenda and overreach.
