In the upcoming episode of the ZDF series "Erzgebirge Crimes," airing tonight at 8:15 PM, the investigation into a mysterious death takes a surprising turn. Kommissarin Karina Szabo, played by Julia Koschitz, is noticeably absent, with her departure from the series being gradual as she will still be present in the next two already filmed episodes.

The deceased, Holger Berthold, an alcoholic man found hanged in his house, initially appeared to be a suicide. However, pathologist Elena Kulikova's autopsy reveals that Berthold had too much methyl alcohol in his blood, suggesting that he didn't take his own life.

Meanwhile, investigator Szabo is leaving the series, with no immediate replacement in sight. The production company has not yet decided whether forester Saskia Bergelt (Teresa Weißbach) and pathologist Kulikova will gain more weight in the series.

The investigation leads the team back to the time before the fall of the Berlin Wall, with the deceased Berthold and another victim, identified as the deceased from a construction site, being identical twins. The specific events that occurred back then are yet to be revealed in the episode.

Commissioner Winkler, played by Tom Beck, is nowhere to be found during the investigation, with help calls from his distressing situation in an abandoned bunker heard throughout the episode.

Mandoki, a key figure in the series since its inception in 2019, is also leaving the show. Mandoki cited lack of time for other projects due to the shooting schedule as the reason for her departure.

The latest episodes continue with Kommissar Robert Winkler as a key figure, with no mention of a new lead investigator replacing Szabo.

In a surprising twist, scenes show Winkler getting closer to death, but the nature of these events remains a mystery.

As Szabo applies for a position as a chief commissioner in Leipzig, the future of "Erzgebirge Crimes" remains uncertain. Tune in tonight to catch the latest episode and unravel the mysteries that lie ahead.
