Multichoice South Africa Curates Contents for Over 200 Television Channels Employing Vizrt Technology
MultiChoice Enhances African Entertainment with Viz One and M-Net
MultiChoice, a leading provider of entertainment services in Africa, is making significant strides in supporting African talent and storytelling. The company is committed to elevating African creatives through investments in original productions, enterprise development, and the MultiChoice Innovation Fund and Africa Accelerator.
One of the key tools MultiChoice uses to achieve this is Viz One, an enterprise media asset management (MAM) system. This powerful platform is used to produce, acquire, and package media for sports and entertainment, broadcast across over 200 channels on the African continent.
Viz One captures metadata from every item in the system at both the asset and timeline level. This meticulous metadata management ensures that content can be quickly found and utilised, whether it's currently being imported or sits within the archive. The system prioritises and distributes content at scale, operating 24/7 to meet the demands of its extensive media portfolio.
MultiChoice's MAM System, which includes Viz One, manages all content processing for the entire content broadcast on MultiChoice and SuperSport linear and digital channels. This system has grown significantly since its establishment in 2012. What started as a small IBM Tivoli Storage Management digital tape storage with 800 terabytes of data, has now expanded to over 72 petabytes of data, replicated at their DR site.
This expansive archive currently stands at over 1.5 million hours of HD content, making it a valuable resource for MultiChoice's vast media portfolio. Users can quickly find the right piece of media, thanks to Viz One's cataloguing capabilities. This feature makes MultiChoice's vast media portfolio available to users for searching and previewing media.
MultiChoice's entertainment services reach over 23.5 million households in 50 markets across sub-Saharan Africa. The company offers entertainment in various forms, including SuperSport, DStv, and GOtv. Through its support of M-Net's channels that create original productions of authentic African stories, MultiChoice is enriching a broad ecosystem of consumer services for creatives across Africa.
The efficiency of all MultiChoice platforms and programs relies on using their digital tape storage as efficiently as possible. The Media Asset Management Engineering and Support Team at MultiChoice, which had more than doubled in personnel by 2015, plays a crucial role in this. They create highlights, program versions, and stage media for playout every day of the week.
