In a bold move, hundreds of people have set sail from ports around the Mediterranean, aiming to break Israel's naval blockade of the Gaza Strip. This civilian flotilla, which includes individuals from 44 countries, has gained significant support, particularly in Rome, Barcelona, and Genoa.

The boat leading the flotilla from Rome, draped in an enormous Palestinian flag, is making its way down the Tiber. NPR's Ruth Sherlock, reporting from Rome, notes that the boat is raising awareness for the flotilla. People in the city are waving at the boat and joining in with the chants in support of the mission.

Thousands of people marched in Barcelona and Genoa to show solidarity as the first boats in the flotilla set sail. An Italian group has received hundreds of tons of food to send with the flotilla.

The flotilla is facing a naval blockade imposed by Israel on the Gaza Strip. Past activist flotillas to Gaza have always failed to break the blockade. However, this time, the effort is receiving a swell of public support in parts of Europe.

Gisella Dragoi, speaking in Rome, said there is a common thread in humanity that links everyone, and people feel desperate to help Palestinians in Gaza. The effort to break the blockade was organized by climate activist Greta Thunberg and others. Four Italian lawmakers are joining the flotilla.

The boats in Rome, Barcelona, and Genoa are making as much noise and raising as much awareness as possible for the flotilla. This flotilla is likely symbolic, but it's the first time an action like this receives support on this scale.

Despite the challenges ahead, the participants remain hopeful, driven by the desire to help those in Gaza. The flotilla serves as a testament to the power of solidarity and the human spirit in the face of adversity.
