Inquiries Regarding Mushrooms Surge by Almost Triple in August - Mushroom crisis: A staggering increase in mushroom-related inquiries during August
In the summer of 2025, the poison control center (Giftnotruf) in Erfurt saw a significant increase in calls regarding suspected mushroom poisonings. The preceding wet weather is believed to have contributed to this spike.
During August 2025, there were 62 calls about suspected mushroom poisoning in the states of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, Saxony, Saxony-Anhalt, and Thuringia. This number was nearly three times higher than the 21 calls about suspected mushroom poisoning in the same states during August 2024.
The increase in calls can be attributed to the confusion between edible and poisonous mushroom species. For instance, the field mushroom and the panther mushroom, or the common mushroom and the jack-o'-lantern, are often mistaken for one another.
The false morel, a mushroom that often grows on meadows and is frequently tried by children, can cause mild gastrointestinal symptoms. However, more dangerous species such as the death cap, which contains the toxin amatoxin, can lead to severe vomiting, diarrhea, and potentially fatal poisoning.
In the first half of 2025, 151 people called the poison helpline due to suspected mushroom poisoning. This number was higher than the 111 calls during the comparable period of the previous year. It's worth noting that during the main season for edible mushrooms like porcini, chestnuts, or hedgehog mushrooms, the number of calls to the poison helpline also increases, depending on the weather.
Some mushroom species could not be definitively identified in the inquiries about suspected mushroom poisoning. This highlights the importance of proper identification and caution when foraging for wild mushrooms.
While the city of Erfurt was not mentioned in relation to mushroom poisoning inquiries in this report, it's clear that the issue is a concern across multiple states. As the main season for edible mushrooms continues, it's crucial for foragers to exercise caution and seek expert advice when necessary.
