Mystery of the Desert Intruder: Fish Found in Saudi Arabia's AlUla's Arid Landscape

In the heart of Saudi Arabia's golden sands lies a natural wonder that has captured the imagination of many – the Fish Rock of Wadi AlFann. This unique desert sculpture, part of AlUla's vast collection of natural formations, is set to become a centrepiece of the Royal Commission for AlUla's (RCU) "Journey Through Time Masterplan."

The Fish Rock, stretching approximately 200 meters, or the length of two football fields, bears an uncanny resemblance to a giant fish swimming through the dunes. Its discovery has sparked wild theories, with some jokingly suggesting it to be a fossilized giant sea creature. However, according to Khaled Al Enazi, the RCU's Director General, it is not a fossil but a sandstone formation shaped over time by natural forces.

Al Enazi shared breathtaking drone images of the Fish Rock in 2022, which he named the Desert Fish. These images, showcasing the Fish Rock's prominent position in the desert landscape, caused a social media buzz. Some even joked that the rock was a swimming fish amidst the dunes.

AlUla, often referred to as Saudi Arabia's open-air museum, is full of such natural sculptures. The famous Jabal Al-Fil (Elephant Rock) and formations resembling giant faces and mythical creatures are just a few examples. The Masterplan aims to transform AlUla into a leading destination for arts, culture, and heritage, while carefully preserving its unique desert treasures.

The Fish Rock serves as a surreal reminder that the vast desert of AlUla was once shaped by water. The Masterplan, therefore, includes careful preservation of AlUla's unique desert treasures, ensuring that future generations can appreciate the region's rich history and natural beauty.

The Fish Rock of Wadi AlFann is just one of the many attractions that make AlUla a must-visit destination. From the ancient rock art at Hegra to the stunning landscapes of the Empty Quarter, there is something for everyone in this remarkable region. So, whether you're an art enthusiast, a history buff, or simply someone who appreciates the beauty of nature, AlUla awaits your discovery.
