In Schleswig-Holstein, the new school year commences with around 292,000 children and young people starting their educational journey, and approximately 24,700 of these are beginning their first class. Education Minister Dorit Stenke has announced that schools will incorporate digital media into their teaching methods, allowing mobile phones to be used for this purpose.
The German Children's Aid Organization (DKHW), the German Traffic Club (VCD), and the Education and Training Union (VBE) have urged children to walk, skate, or cycle to school as much as possible. To ensure safety, parents are advised to choose a safe school route with their children and walk it together several times before the start of the school year.
Two projects, EVi (Focus on four and a half years) and LeA.SH1 (Learning outcomes in Schleswig-Holstein, grade one), will start this school year to support the transition of children from kindergarten to primary school. The LeA project aims to gather information on the linguistic and mathematical competencies of all children recently enrolled in school, with a digital test within the first eight school weeks to assess the learning situation, guide teaching, and provide individual support.
The Ministry of Education reports that only 51 out of 20,174 teaching positions at general schools are unoccupied. Minister Stenke stated that a total of 3,552 people have been hired for the new school year at general and vocational schools, of which only 616 are permanent teachers. Jette Waldinger-Thiering, an SSW MP, has criticized the high number of temporary contracts, stating it doesn't provide lasting perspectives for teachers or continuity for students.
In secondary school, all subjects will have performance assessments. Computer science will be a compulsory subject from grade seven onwards. Students in grade ten and above may use mobile phones on school grounds and during learning outside the classroom. From this school year, students in the first four grades may use digital aids and AI applications for performance assessments, in addition to books. Mathematics tests in primary school will now include a review section to show teachers if basic competencies are secure.
New rules for digital device usage apply to primary, secondary schools, and support centers. Students in grade one to nine may only use digital devices for media education or in emergency situations. From the school year, students in the first four grades may use digital aids and AI applications for performance assessments, in addition to books.
Both SPD and FDP have criticized the loss of positions, stating that the new school year in Schleswig-Holstein will have to be managed with fewer teachers, more students, more tasks, less teaching, less teaching security, and larger learning groups. The opposition, SSW, has criticized the new testing procedures in schools as overwhelming, suggesting they should provide relief instead.
The Federal Director of the German Children's Aid Organization, Holger Hofmann, has urged parents to avoid using the 'parent taxi' as much as possible and to accompany their children on foot or by bike, or to let them go independently in walking or cycling groups. This would reduce the morning traffic chaos in front of many schools. Schools have until the end of the school year to incorporate these regulations into their school rules. Traffic participants should be particularly attentive at the start of the school year on Monday.
