Navigating Relations Across Borders: A Foreign Policy Amidst Societal Struggles (with Russia)
On Friday, 17.10., from 18:30-20:30, Michael Thumann, a renowned Russia expert and foreign political correspondent of ZEIT, will be presenting his new book, "Frozen Silence Downstream. A Journey from Moscow to Berlin", at the Leipzig Adult Education Center. The event, organised by the Saxon State Agency for Political Education, is expected to provide insights into the current state of German-Russian relations and the role of non-state actors in conflict resolution.
Thumann's latest work discusses the renewed division of Europe and the deterioration of German-Russian relations under Vladimir Putin. His book is a timely exploration of the complexities and challenges facing Europe in the 21st century.
The event will also focus on the importance of the non-state approach, which aims to overcome political or historical barriers between countries, even when governments change. Strengthening civilian control of state power is a key goal of this approach. Since the 1970s, non-state actors have been involved in conflict resolution, with notable contributions coming from religious institutions such as the Russian Orthodox Church, which has pursued a role as a peace mediator and moral voice during conflicts, while emphasizing neutrality and offering prayers for peace. Other civil society groups, including digital civic engagement platforms and various social organizations, have also played roles by addressing issues overlooked by state actors and monitoring threatening developments.
Active, pluralistic civil societies create space for broad discussions and enable political participation of all groups. This event could offer opportunities for such discussions, especially in former Soviet states where scientific, cultural, and civil society exchange plays a crucial role.
Michael Thumann is the author of the bestseller "Revenge. How Putin created the most dangerous regime in the world." His expertise and insights into Russian politics make him an ideal speaker for this event.
Attendees can look forward to a thought-provoking discussion on the renewed division of Europe and the deterioration of German-Russian relations under Vladimir Putin, as well as the role of non-state actors in conflict resolution. The event promises to be a valuable opportunity for learning, discussion, and political engagement.
