Nazi Germany surrenders unconditionally to the Allied forces, marking the end of World War II in Europe.

Professor Dr. Arnd Bauerkaemper, a renowned historian specialising in modern history, will be the guest speaker at an event commemorating the 80th anniversary of the end of World War II in Europe. The main event, part of the city portal's commemoration, will take place in the small banquet hall of Detmold's town hall.

Born in Lage and educated at the University of Bielefeld, Professor Bauerkaemper was a professor of 19th and 20th-century history at the Free University of Berlin until 2024. His expertise and research make him a suitable guest speaker for the event, which will delve into the significance of May 8, 1945, for Germany's history.

The lecture will address the question of whether the division of Germany, following the end of World War II, was inevitable. It will also discuss the different memories of the "Third Reich" in the two German states. The lasting effects of these events will be a key focus, providing valuable insights into the shaping of post-war Germany.

The event is free to attend, and reservations can be made through the VHS at 05231 977 8010. For inquiries about the event, please contact Daniela Lang at 05231 977 201.
