NBA Team Dallas Mavericks waive and stretch contract of Olivier-Maxence Prosper, enabling them to re-sign Dante Exum.
The Dallas Mavericks have made a roster move to bring in Australian point guard Dante Exum, following the waiving and stretching of Olivier-Maxence Prosper. This move creates a much-needed roster spot for Exum, who is expected to replace Prosper as the 15th standard contract on the team's roster.
Exum, who was the No. 5 overall pick in the 2014 NBA draft, spent the first seven years of his professional career with the Utah Jazz and Cleveland Cavaliers. After a two-season stint in Europe, Exum is set to return to the NBA with the Mavericks. In 20 games (13 starts) with Dallas last season, he averaged 8.7 points, 1.7 rebounds, 2.8 assists, and 18.6 minutes per contest, while shooting 47.8% from the floor and 43.4% from beyond the arc.
Injuries have been a significant hindrance in Exum's career, limiting him to 75 total appearances over the past two seasons. However, the Mavericks are hoping that he can regain his form and provide a valuable contribution to the team.
Meanwhile, Olivier-Maxence Prosper, who was selected 24th overall by the Sacramento Kings in the 2023 draft before being traded to the Mavs on draft night, saw less playing time after the Mavericks drafted Cooper Flagg. In 92 games (five starts) with the Mavericks, Prosper averaged 3.5 points, 2.2 rebounds, and 10 minutes per contest. He shot 39.6% from the field and 26% from 3-point territory with the Mavericks.
Prosper was originally signed by the Memphis Grizzlies for the 2023/24 season after being waived by the Dallas Mavericks. However, the Mavericks declined Prosper's $5.3 million team option for the 2026-27 season, making him an unrestricted free agent. It is expected that he will draw interest from other teams.
Another notable player for the Mavericks is P.J. Washington, who had a successful season last year. In 57 games (56 starts) last season, Washington averaged 14.7 points, a career-high 7.8 rebounds, 2.3 assists, 1.1 steals, 1.1 blocks, and 32.2 minutes per contest, while shooting 45.3% from the field and 38.1% from deep.
The Mavericks are "likely" to give Washington a contract extension this offseason. If he signs an extension, he would be ineligible to be traded until next offseason under the NBA's six-month rule. Washington originally signed a three-year, $46.5 million contract with the Charlotte Hornets in August 2023. He was traded to Dallas in February 2024. On Friday, Washington became eligible to sign a four-year, $89.2 million contract extension.
This move to bring in Exum will result in a $1,002,360 annual cap hit for Dallas for the next three seasons (2024-2026). The Mavericks were already carrying a $2,208,856 dead money cap hit for JaVale McGee for the same years.
As the offseason unfolds, the Mavericks are looking to strengthen their roster and compete at the highest level. The addition of Dante Exum is a step in that direction.
