Negotiations with North Macedonia may not succeed, according to Michael Roth's concerns
A long-standing dispute over identity between Bulgaria and North Macedonia continues to cast a shadow over the EU's accession process for the latter. The credibility of the European Union is at stake if the accession process is not initiated, according to Michael Roth, Minister of State for Europe in the Federal Foreign Office.
Roth has been actively seeking solutions that take into account the interests of both sides for weeks. He warns of the potential failure of the planned EU accession talks with North Macedonia, scheduled for December, due to Bulgaria's blocking stance.
At the heart of the dispute lies North Macedonia's insistence on an independent identity, which contradicts the Bulgarian government's perspective, according to Sofia. The Bulgarian government views North Macedonia as an "invented nation" and demands recognition of the Bulgarian roots of the language and history of North Macedonia. Bulgaria insists that North Macedonia acknowledges the shared historical heritage, including the Bulgarian influence on its language and history.
However, Skopje rejects the Bulgarian government's portrayal of North Macedonia's language and history having Bulgarian roots. North Macedonia has made far-reaching concessions in the EU accession talks, but it doesn't look very good for the start of accession negotiations as of now.
The Bulgarian government accuses North Macedonia of not fulfilling its obligations under the good neighbor agreement. The German government insists that Bulgaria and North Macedonia resolve their bilateral disputes independently of the EU enlargement process.
Michael Roth emphasises the need for all sides to move towards a good solution. He believes that the EU must start the accession process for North Macedonia now, as the credibility of the EU is at stake if the process is delayed any further.
The dispute over identity is a complex issue that requires a balanced and diplomatic approach. The EU, the German government, and all involved parties must work together to find a solution that respects the sovereignty and identity of both nations while maintaining the unity and integrity of the EU. Only then can the EU accession process for North Macedonia proceed smoothly and maintain the EU's credibility.
