Nepalese officials confirm the tragic death of renowned Swiss mountaineer Ueli Steck on Mount Everest
Swiss Mountaineer Ueli Steck Dies in Mount Everest Accident
Ueli Steck, one of the most-renowned mountaineers of his generation, has tragically passed away in a mountaineering accident near Mount Everest in Nepal. The exact circumstances of Steck's death are still unclear, but his body was recovered from the site and taken to Lukla.
Steck, best known for his speed-climbing and recipient of the prestigious "Piolet d'Or" in 2014, was planning to climb Mount Everest and Mount Lhotse next month. His aim was to perform a quick climb of both peaks, including an overnight stop at more than 8,000 meters, known as the "death zone."
In a recent post on his website, Steck discussed the transience of success in mountaineering and the inevitable decline that comes with age. He stated that failure for him would be to die and not come home during the upcoming expedition.
Sadly, this is not the first time Steck has been involved in a mountaineering accident. During his last trip to Everest in 2013, he suffered a setback involving a violent altercation with a group of local guides.
Steck's passion for mountaineering was not always shared by the mountaineering scene. He once considered himself an "outsider" because athletic achievement was more important to him than adventure.
In a touching tribute, Steck found the remains of fellow professional climber Alex Lowe and his cameraman on the 26,335-foot-tall Shishapangma mountain in Tibet, 16 years after they were buried by an avalanche.
Mingma Sherpa of Seven Summit Treks confirmed Steck's death. Hundreds of foreign climbers are on the mountains to attempt scaling Himalayan peaks in May, and Steck's loss will be deeply felt by the mountaineering community.
The Himalayan Rescue Association supported Steck during his final attempt to climb Mount Everest and Mount Lhotse. Steck's body will be a poignant reminder of the risks and challenges faced by mountaineers, who push themselves to the limits in pursuit of their dreams.
