Netflix enables Android users to stream incomplete downloads
As Hot Vax Summer kicks off and people begin to return to restaurants, travel, and eventually offices, Netflix has rolled out a new feature that is both timely and beneficial. The streaming giant has introduced a partial download feature for its service, allowing Android users to watch partially downloaded content.
This update, while not signifying a significant overhaul, is considered a solid one given the current state of internet speeds in the United States. Previously, Netflix required users to fully download offline content before they could watch it.
The new feature is simple to use. Users can enable the setting from either the Continue Watching section or the Download menu. Once enabled, users will get the option to keep watching or finish downloads once they regain a strong enough connection.
Netflix first introduced offline downloads for its service back in 2016. The company acknowledges the frustration that arises when a download doesn't complete due to unreliable WiFi or a maxed-out data plan. The new feature aims to alleviate this issue.
In a statement, Netflix said, "Downloaded series and movies can make any moment more entertaining." This feature should help make commuting less painful when people start returning to the office. However, the partially watching downloaded content feature is not yet available on iPhones and iPads.
Netflix is working on testing Downloads for You on iOS devices soon. According to The Verge, this test is expected to begin in the near future. The partial download feature for iPhones and iPads is expected to be available with the upcoming iOS and iPadOS updates scheduled for late 2025.
For now, the Downloads for You recommendation feature will remain exclusive to Android devices. To use the new feature on Android, users need to run at least version 7.64 of their operating system.
Netflix's announcement comes as a welcome development for users who often find themselves in situations where internet connectivity is poor or data usage is limited. The streaming service continues to innovate and adapt to the needs of its users in these challenging times.
