New Mansfield housing plan designed by notable architects takes top spot in competition
In a significant move towards the future of Mansfield, Proctor and Matthews, a renowned architect organisation, have emerged victorious in the RIBA competition. Their winning design promises a sensitive and imaginative new development of homes in the heart of the town.
The development, situated on White Hart Street within the Bridge Street and Market Place conservation area, will be a key part of the Church Street Quarter in the emerging town centre masterplan. The homes, designed to be fit for the 21st century, will offer a mix of family housing and flats for elderly people, catering to the needs of residents of all ages.
The listed building and non-designated heritage assets in the area have been carefully considered in the design. Proctor and Matthews have respected the area's heritage, weaving many references to the site's former history into the masterplan. The design interweaves and layers these elements, creating a re-interpreted character that pays homage to the location's traditional forms, materials, and colours.
Teresa Borsuk, senior adviser at Pollard Thomas Edwards, acted as the RIBA's architect advisor for the competition. She praised the careful crafting of the proposed masterplan, appreciating the panel's decision to award the top prize to Proctor and Matthews.
The development is intended to unlock wider regeneration plans for the town. Proctor and Matthews will be working closely with Mansfield District Council on the project, ensuring that the development forms a sensitive exemplar of new Mansfield homes. The design aims to provide affordable, energy-efficient, and future-proofed homes, making people feel proud to live in these new residences.
The cost of the development is expected to be between £14m and £19m. The homes are designed to be a testament to Proctor and Matthews' commitment to creating architectural excellence while respecting the area's rich history and heritage. (Image: Proctors and Matthews)
The development will not only bring new homes to Mansfield but also contribute to the town's ongoing regeneration efforts. The winning project promises to be a significant milestone in Mansfield's future, offering a blend of modern living and historical charm.
