New York City: Initial public hearing for the proposed casino in Hell's Kitchen generates positive feedback
In the heart of Hell's Kitchen, New York City, a new development project is causing a stir. Known as The Avenir, this ambitious complex is spearheaded by developers Greenwood Gaming and Rush Street Gaming, alongside Silverstein Properties and Greenwood Gaming & Entertainment. The project was presented during a public hearing on Wednesday.
The proposed complex is set to create new jobs, with the number yet to be specified. It will also offer affordable housing and feature a food hall, a dozen restaurants, and a 1,000-room Hyatt hotel. At its core, however, is a casino, occupying about 12% of the project footprint.
The inclusion of a casino has sparked controversy among some locals, who voice concerns about the impact on the neighbourhood's future. Some residents have expressed opposition, fearing that the gambling establishment may not be the best fit for the area.
The developers have also proposed an expansion of commercial casinos as part of the project. However, details about the community amenities and jobs that the complex may provide have not been disclosed as yet.
The NYPD outpost, mentioned earlier, is still part of the proposed complex. The owners of The Avenir are Kevin P. Maloney's Property Markets Group and the Kushner family.
The developers are seeking one of the city's coveted downstate gaming licenses. The hearing was the first of two public hearings, providing an opportunity for residents to voice their opinions and concerns. If approved, the complex may create additional jobs beyond those initially mentioned, and may provide additional community amenities beyond those already proposed.
The complex, with its mix of residential, commercial, and leisure facilities, promises to be a significant addition to the Hell's Kitchen landscape. As the project progresses, it will be interesting to see how the community responds and how the city authorities decide on the gaming license application.
