The Lancaster Central School District in upstate New York has retired its "Redskins" team name, following a wave of criticism and protests.

In a statement posted on its website, the district acknowledged that the 'Redskins' mascot is recognized as a symbol of ethnic stereotyping. The board's resolution also states that the district cannot continue practices which are offensive and hurtful to others.

The decision comes after three days of protests by students, following the retirement of the team nickname. According to Carolyn Thompson of The Associated Press, approximately 300 students walked out of Lancaster school in protest.

The move has had repercussions, with multiple high schools cancelling upcoming lacrosse games with Lancaster. Schools such as Akron and Lake Shore, which have a high number of Native American students, have boycotted games in solidarity. A majority of Akron High School's lacrosse team is Native American.

The actions of these schools "hastened the decision" for Lancaster to retire its team name, according to a report by Carolyn Thompson of The Associated Press.

The Lancaster Central School District has not yet set a timeline for selecting a new team name. Superintendent Michael J. Vallely plans to involve students in the process.

The board work sessions do not provide an opportunity for public comment, according to district spokeswoman Patricia Burgio. However, a report by The Buffalo News indicates that over 100 people attended a board work session on Monday, but most were asked to leave due to fire-code violations.

The controversy has not been without its controversies. Some supporters of the team name have threatened board members, and Keith Olbermann, a commentator on ESPN, criticized the protesters as the "world's worst" in the sports world.

Despite the challenges, the district aims to teach children kindness and acceptance of differences. The district's statement reiterates its commitment to fostering a safe and inclusive environment for all students.
