Newcomer from South Africa breaks ODI record, surpassing Indian batsman's five half-centuries in five innings debut feat.
Matthew Breetzke made history at Lord's on September 4, as he scored his fifth consecutive half-century in One Day International (ODI) cricket during South Africa's second game against England. This achievement makes Breetzke the sole holder of the record for the most consecutive half-centuries from debut in ODI cricket.
Before Breetzke, the record was jointly held by India batter Navjot Singh Sidhu, who scored four consecutive fifties from his debut in 1987 during the Cricket World Cup. Sidhu's record was later equaled and then broken by Breetzke.
Breetzke's impressive run began with his debut against New Zealand earlier this year, where he scored 150, breaking the record for the highest score by a player on debut in a men's ODI. On this occasion, he reached his 50 off his 57th ball at the crease.
Coming in to bat at No.4, replacing captain Temba Bavuma who was out for four, Breetzke formed a valuable partnership with Tristan Stubbs through the middle overs. However, Aiden Markram was dismissed one short of a second consecutive half-century.
The table below provides a comprehensive list of players who have scored consecutive half-centuries from their debut in ODI cricket.
