NewMG4 Urban Electric Vehicle to Debut in Australia: A larger, more economical version of the current MG4 is set to be introduced, but it won't replace its existing counterpart in the market.

The British automaker MG Motor has announced the launch of its latest electric vehicle, the MG4 Urban, set to hit Australian roads in Q2 of 2026. This all-new model rides on an innovative platform and marks a significant shift in the brand's electric vehicle lineup.

Unlike the current MG4, the larger Urban variant will switch to front-wheel drive, a departure from the existing rear-drive model. The smaller MG4, however, will remain on sale with a reduced line-up and at a higher price than the new model.

The new MG4 Urban will feature a single e-motor that produces 120kW and 250Nm, offering a smooth and efficient driving experience. The Urban will come with two battery pack options in Australia - a 43kWh and a 54kWh, catering to various driving needs.

Dimensions-wise, the new MG4 Urban measures 4395mm long, 1842mm wide, and 1551mm tall, with a wheelbase of 2755mm. This compact yet spacious design allows for a generous 471-litres of luggage space above the boot.

Inside, the new MG4 Urban boasts a host of modern features. As standard, it comes equipped with a 10.25-inch touchscreen, which can be upgraded to a 15.6-inch unit running MGxOppo Smart Car Connectivity software. Other highlights include 'soft-light mirrors', a new ventilated 50W wireless phone charger, and seats that fold flat into a 1.8 square-metre bed (rear seats are 60:40 split-folded).

Comfort and convenience are not overlooked either. Heated and ventilated seats, a heated steering wheel, 245-color ambient lighting, and a panoramic glass roof with an electric sunshade will all be available.

The new MG4 Urban will compete as a cheaper electric hatchback in Australia, going head-to-head with models like the Opel Corsa Electric, VW ID. Polo, Dacia Spring, CitroΓ«n e-C3, and Hyundai i10 Electric.

MG has promised up to 30 different stowage spaces in the Urban, including a 98-litre space under the boot floor with a dry-wet separation. The new MG4 Urban weighs between 1415kg and 1485kg, making it a lightweight yet robust option for daily commutes.

The existing rear-drive version of the MG4 will only be offered with a 64kWh battery and will offer a range between 400km and 450km. With its 42.8kWh lithium iron phosphate (LFP) battery, the new MG4 Urban can drive up to 437km, and with the larger 53.95kWh powerpack, it can drive up to 530km.

The positioning of the new front-drive 2026 MG4 Urban in the Australian market is yet to be confirmed. MG Motor Australia will offer the all-new MG4 all-electric hatch, marking another step forward in the brand's commitment to sustainable mobility solutions.
