NHL's 2025 Rookie Tournaments Bring Forth Fresh Talent and Shift Venues

The NHL's top prospects are gearing up for a series of exciting rookie tournaments across North America. Here's a rundown of the participating teams, key players, and tournament locations for the upcoming season.

Colorado Avalanche, Utah Mammoth, and Vegas Golden Knights to Square Off in Highlands Ranch, Colorado

The Colorado Avalanche, Utah Mammoth, and Vegas Golden Knights will be facing off at the South Suburban Sports Complex in Highlands Ranch, Colorado, for the 2025 Rookie Showcase. Among the Avalanche's roster are Gavin Brindley and Sean Behrens, while Caleb Desnoyers, the Mammoth's 2025 No. 4 pick, will also be in action.

Prospects Challenge and Rookie Faceoffs

The Boston Bruins, Buffalo Sabres, Columbus Blue Jackets, New Jersey Devils, and Pittsburgh Penguins will be participating in the 2025 Prospects Challenge. Meanwhile, the 2025 Golden State Rookie Faceoff will feature the Chicago Blackhawks, Minnesota Wild, St. Louis Blues, Anaheim Ducks, Los Angeles Kings, and San Jose Sharks.

The 2024 Rookie Faceoff has been split into three separate groups, with the Carolina Hurricanes, Florida Panthers, Nashville Predators, and Tampa Bay Lightning participating in the 2025 Prospect Tournament in Wesley Chapel, Florida.

Other Notable Tournaments

The Young Stars Classic in Penticton, B.C. is also re-aligning, while the 2025 Prospect Showdown in Montreal, Que. has expanded from two teams to four, with the Ottawa Senators and Winnipeg Jets joining the Canadiens and the Toronto Maple Leafs. The 2025 Tom Kurvers Showcase in Saint Paul, Minn. will feature the Chicago Blackhawks, Minnesota Wild, and St. Louis Blues, with Zeev Buium and Jimmy Snuggerud likely participants for the Wild.

Key Players to Watch

Radim Mrtka from the WHL’s Seattle Thunderbirds, who was selected ninth overall by the host Sabres in June, is the top-ranked player from the 2025 draft who should be participating in the 2025 Prospects Challenge. Brady Martin, the power forward from the OHL’s Soo Greyhounds, is a player to watch in the 2025 Prospect Tournament.

In the 2025 Golden State Rookie Faceoff, Michael Misa, Joshua Ravensbergen, Haoxi (Simon) Wang, and Sam Dickinson will be representing the Sharks. Jack Nesbitt from the OHL’s Windsor Spitfires is expected to be in the Flyers' roster, but they will be without Porter Martone, who committed to Michigan State.

Absences and Exceptions

Mason West, the first-rounder of the Blackhawks, will not be participating in the 2025 Tom Kurvers Showcase as he is busy with high-school football. The Washington Capitals will hold their rookie camp from Sept. 12-15 at McMullen Arena in Annapolis, Md., but Matthew Schaefer's New York Islanders are not scheduled to take part in any of the rookie tournaments.

The Blue Jackets have the most intriguing overall prospect pool, but NCAA commits like Cayden Lindstrom and Jackson Smith are not eligible to play in rookie tournaments. Each team will play three games in the 2025 Prospect Tournament, while each team will play two games in the 2025 Tom Kurvers Showcase.

These tournaments promise to be a thrilling showcase of the NHL's future stars, offering fans a glimpse into the league's promising talent pool. Stay tuned for more updates as these events approach!
