Nitrux Announces Major Changes and Updates

In a significant move, the Linux distribution Nitrux has announced a series of changes and updates that are set to reshape its user experience.

Firstly, Nitrux is transitioning from the SDDM display manager to greetd QtGreet, adopting a Wayland-only approach. This shift away from X11 sessions is part of Nitrux's commitment to a modern, dynamic, and customizable user interface.

In line with this change, the discontinued NX Desktop will be replaced by a combination of Hyprland, Waybar, and Wlogout. Hyprland, known as the hottest, most dynamic tiling window compositor, promises to offer an extensive customisation experience without compromising on performance or simplicity.

Nitrux is also prioritising its own app distribution methods, NX AppHub and AppBox. As part of this focus, the distribution will phase out support for older FUSE 2 runtimes for AppImages, requiring them to use the newer FUSE 3 runtime instead.

The transition process is expected to take a few weeks, and during this time, the NX Desktop project page will be archived. It's worth noting that the Linux kernel used by Nitrux has been switched from Liquorix to Cachy.

Nitrux is also expanding its hardware support by adding ARM64 alongside the existing x86_64 architecture. This move aims to cater to a wider range of devices.

However, there are some developments that are currently on hold due to limited resources and community interest. The Development of Maui Shell is one such project.

Uri Herrera, the founder of Nitrux, described these changes as making Nitrux more dynamic and customizable. Despite these changes, the developer and founder of Nitrux are not mentioned in the recent search results, nor has there been any announcement about what will happen in the coming weeks.

One challenge that Nitrux faces is the lack of PSI support in Liquorix, which was cited as a problem for Waydroid. However, the team is optimistic about overcoming this hurdle and continuing to provide a high-quality Linux distribution to its users.
