No scheduled Putin-Zelenskyy encounter indicated by Lavrov
In recent developments, the possibility of a summit between Russian President Vladimir Putin and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has been raised. However, the meeting is not confirmed as of yet, and uncertainty remains over whether it will take place.
Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov stated that there are currently no plans for such a meeting. Lavrov noted that Washington has expressed a desire for both sides to agree on principles, including Ukraine's non-membership in NATO and territorial concessions.
These conditions have been met with rejection by President Zelenskyy. The US President, Donald Trump, has suggested bringing the two leaders together to end the war that began with Russia's invasion of Ukraine in February 2022.
The proposed summit is conditional on being at the final stage of peace negotiations. The diplomat leading the negotiations on the Russian side is Vladimir Medinsky, while Dmytro Kuleba, as Foreign Minister, has been the main negotiator for Ukraine.
Despite the proposed conditions, it seems that Russia and Ukraine still hold sharply opposing positions. The war-torn nation of Ukraine continues to hope for a resolution, but the path to peace remains uncertain.
As the world watches, we await further developments in these ongoing negotiations and the potential for a historic summit between Putin and Zelenskyy. Stay tuned for updates on this evolving situation.
