In a closely contested match, world number one Novak Djokovic has advanced to the quarterfinals of the 2025 US Open. The Serbian tennis star defeated Jan-Lennard Struff, the last remaining German player in the tournament, in straight sets.

The match began with Djokovic quickly asserting his dominance, winning the first set 6-3. Struff, who had qualified for the main draw, struggled to find his rhythm, with his first serve infrequent against the formidable Djokovic.

Despite Struff's best efforts, Djokovic maintained his lead, outserving his opponent with the most aces in the tournament. However, it was Struff's mistakes that were punished, as Djokovic capitalised on every opportunity to take the second and third sets 6-3 and 6-2 respectively.

Struff had made it to the round of 16 after defeating Holger Rune and last year's semifinalist Frances Tiafoe. His impressive run at the US Open this year saw him reach the round of 16 at Wimbledon as well.

Meanwhile, another German tennis player, Alexander Zverev, had an early exit from the tournament.

Former football national player Mats Hummels watched Struff's match at the US Open.

Djokovic's victory sets up a quarterfinal match against Taylor Fritz, who easily defeated Tomas Machac from the Czech Republic in his previous match. Fritz will be looking to continue his impressive form as he aims to challenge Djokovic for a spot in the semifinals.

Djokovic's win brings him one step closer to his 25th major title, a milestone that would see him tie Rafael Nadal and Roger Federer for the most Grand Slam titles in men's tennis history.

Struff, who has attempted to beat Djokovic eight times but has not been successful, will no doubt be disappointed with his loss, but can take pride in his impressive run at the US Open this year. His prize money for reaching the round of 16 is $400,000.
