'On the edge of a catastrophe': the anxiety of the Luxembourg national team, who suffered a road accident prior to their match against the Bleuets, gets a delay announced
In a shocking turn of events, the Luxembourg U21 team experienced a bus accident on the N24 near Languidic, Morbihan, on July 19, 2023. Here's a detailed account of the incident and its aftermath.
The unfortunate event occurred on Thursday evening, as the team was returning from a training session following their journey to Lorraine and Luxembourg by TGV on Friday. The driver of the bus, Rémi D., was found to have fainted, causing the accident. As a result, everyone on board sustained glass shards in their skin due to the accident.
The bus slid for about fifty meters after overturning, its right side lying in the ditch. The first responders quickly arrived at the scene, taking care of the driver and providing first aid to the rest of the delegation, which consisted of 32 members. Four of the eight injured individuals were hospitalized in Lorient to treat burns, cuts, and chest or back pain. The remaining four injured individuals were taken to a nearby school for a medical check-up.
Despite the traumatic incident, the Luxembourg team continued to show resilience. They requested that their upcoming match against the Faroe Islands, originally scheduled for Tuesday, be postponed, citing psychological reasons. The match has been rescheduled to October 3, 2026.
The French team, who were awaiting their friendly against Serbia, offered their support to the Luxembourg team during this challenging time. Instead of the scheduled match, the French team played a friendly at the Moustoir on Friday.
The investigation into the accident is ongoing, with the driver still in the hospital undergoing further tests. The team doctor, along with the first responders, played a crucial role in providing immediate care to those injured.
The Luxembourg team is now focusing on their recovery and preparation for the rescheduled match. The Faroe Islands, too, have expressed their support and understanding, looking forward to a fair and competitive match in October 2026.
Our thoughts are with the Luxembourg U21 team during this difficult time. We hope for a speedy recovery for all those affected by the bus accident.
