Singaporean Para-Swimmer Toh Wei Soong Gears Up for Tokyo 2020 Paralympic Games

Toh Wei Soong, the 22-year-old Singaporean para-swimmer, is eagerly anticipating the competition at the upcoming Tokyo 2020 Paralympic Games. With a golden medal as his ultimate ambition, Toh is well aware of the fierce competition he will face.

Toh's impressive swimming career has already earned him a notable tally of medals. He claimed a bronze at the 2018 Commonwealth Games and two golds in the 2018 Asian Para Games. These achievements have solidified his status as a formidable competitor.

Diagnosed with transverse myelitis, a chronic condition that restricts the use of his legs, when he was just two years old, Toh's journey as a competitive swimmer has been challenging. However, he has remained resilient, thanks in part to the unwavering support of his parents and his dedicated coach, Ang Peng Siong, who he considers his hero and role model.

In addition to his athletic pursuits, Toh is also a soon-to-be student at the National University of Singapore. Balancing his academic commitments with his swimming career has not been easy, and he has had to endure several months of stress to maintain his swimming ability.

Toh's dedication to his sport extends beyond his own achievements. He is set to advocate for "Equality of Opportunity" in a joint school outreach program with the Singapore Disability Sports Council. Furthermore, Toyota has chosen Toh to champion the Start Your Impossible initiative, a project symbolizing Toyota's commitment to mobility for all.

Toh's motto, "If you are willing to beat someone, you must be willing to lose to someone. Only with opponents can you make yourself stronger," reflects his determination and competitive spirit. He is motivated by his teammates and is always striving to improve.

As Toh prepares for his next challenge, the World Para Swimming Championships in Kuching, Malaysia, in July 2019, he remains humble and focused on his goals. His ultimate aim is not just to win, but to inspire other young people to pursue their dreams and overcome obstacles. Toh Wei Soong is a shining example of what can be achieved with determination, hard work, and a positive attitude.
