In the heart of Greater Manchester, a vibrant and united crowd gathered on a hot, sunny day to launch the Greater Manchester Living Income campaign. The event, marked by laughter, singing, dancing, and even tears, symbolised the shared care and unity amongst the people of the region.

The campaign, a community-led initiative, is aimed at transforming the current social security system that, according to many, is hindering rather than helping the people of Greater Manchester. The system, criticised for its dehumanising treatment, has been reported to impose sanctions for volunteering, force individuals into insecure jobs, and even compel disabled people into work.

Shocking statistics reveal that around five in six low-income households on universal credit in Greater Manchester go without essentials, and over a third of children in the region live in poverty. Many residents are working multiple jobs to afford basic necessities, with parents going hungry to feed their children.

Andy Burnham, Mayor of Greater Manchester, attended the event and expressed his commitment to the campaign. He expressed a desire to implement the country's first Living Income pilot at the earliest possible opportunity. The campaign seeks to implement a two-year pilot where 200 households will be guaranteed enough money for essentials and have access to employment support.

The Greater Manchester Living Income Campaign is led by the Greater Manchester Tenants Union, a democratic, member-led union focused on housing issues across Greater Manchester. The campaign is built by Mancunians, regardless of whether they were born and raised in Manchester or chose to make it their home.

The campaign aims to ensure that life is about thriving, not just surviving, and that's why they are campaigning for a Living Income in Greater Manchester. The next step for the campaign is to secure funding for a Living Income pilot in Greater Manchester.

To stay updated on the campaign, people are encouraged to sign up on the campaign's website.
