Original manuscripts by Erich Maria Remarque exhibited for the first time at the Day of the Lower Saxons in Osnabrück
In the heart of Osnabrück, Germany, the Erich Maria Remarque Peace Center is preparing for a unique exhibition, showcasing a largely unknown aspect of the renowned author's work. From August 29 to August 31, visitors can explore Remarque's time as an advertising copywriter during the 38th Lower Saxony Day.
The exhibition, titled "Remarque's Collaboration with Wilhelm Lichtenfeld: A New Perspective," offers a fascinating insight into Remarque's work before his worldwide fame with the anti-war novel All Quiet on the Western Front. The materials, acquired with the support of the Sparkasse Osnabrück Foundation, include drafts created by Remarque while he was employed at Continental in Hannover and later in Berlin for Sport im Bild.
This unpublished collection of documents provides new insights into Remarque's early career as an advertising copywriter. Some of the drafts were created during his tenure at Echo Continental, the magazine of the Continental Rubber Works, where he worked from 1921 to 1924. Remarque collaborated closely with Wilhelm Lichtenfeld, who was responsible for the literary design of the company's communications.
The collection includes drafts for Conti balloon tires, small brochures for "Sunday outing," and photographs with advertising slogans for Continental products. Dr. Sven Jürgensen, director of the Remarque Peace Center, stated that the originals from Lichtenfeld's estate vividly document this collaboration.
Admission to the exhibition is free, making it accessible to all. The exhibition documents Remarque's collaboration with Wilhelm Lichtenfeld during his time at Continental Rubber Works, offering a new perspective on Remarque's work with language in the context of advertising and industrial communication.
This exhibition is a testament to Remarque's versatility as a writer and his ability to excel in various fields. It's a must-visit for any Remarque enthusiast or anyone interested in the history of advertising and industrial communication.
