"Oscar Scandal Disclosure"
Man Convicted of School Attack in Ansbach Arrested in Colombia
A man, who was convicted for a school attack in Germany in 2009, has been arrested in Colombia after his escape from a forensic psychiatric facility three weeks ago. The arrest was the result of meticulous work by the Erlangen Criminal Police Inspectorate and the specially trained target hunters at the Bavarian State Criminal Police Office.
The man, aged 34, had been allowed to leave the forensic psychiatric facility for day trips as part of his therapy since the beginning of the year. According to the public prosecutor's office, there were no incidents or complaints during these outings. However, he did not return from an unaccompanied outing about three weeks ago, triggering a manhunt.
The trail initially led to Munich after his escape, but the man's eventual capture in Colombia was described as "movie-like" and "Oscar-worthy" by the chief prosecutor. Bavarian Interior Minister Joachim Herrmann praised the international cooperation in the man's capture.
The man was sentenced to nine years in juvenile detention for attempted murder in 47 cases in 2010, and ordered for indefinite detention in a psychiatric hospital. During the school attack, he injured nine classmates and a teacher with an axe, knives, and Molotov cocktails.
If everything had gone smoothly, a release period within two years would have been realistic for the man, according to MΓΌhlberger. However, his lawyer stated that he had made progress in his therapy. The man got to know a woman via the internet during his stay.
The man's further stay in the psychiatric hospital was ordered on July 4 of this year. All easing measures could be withdrawn, and a new risk assessment will be made. The fugitive was returned to Germany in the morning and then to Erlangen in the closed department of a psychiatric hospital.
The provided search results do not contain information about which authority decided that the man convicted for the school bloodshed in Ansbach 2009 should return to a psychiatric clinic. The Bavarian state capital was checked immediately after his escape.
The arrest of the man marks the end of a high-profile manhunt, and the incident serves as a reminder of the importance of mental health care and the need for careful monitoring of individuals who have been convicted of serious crimes.
