Ottawa Transit Authority Orders 124 Electric Buses for Eco-Friendly Fleet

New Flyer Industries Canada, a subsidiary of NFI Group, has received an order from Ottawa's transit authority, OC Transpo, to deliver 124 Xcelsior CHARGE NGTM battery-electric buses. This latest investment in electric vehicles is part of OC Transpo's strategy to modernize services and reduce the environmental impact of its fleet.

The procurement of these buses is being supported by a mix of municipal and federal funding. Contributions come from the Canada Infrastructure Bank and the Zero Emission Transit Fund (ZETF) administered by Housing, Infrastructure and Communities Canada.

This new order follows a previous one made by OC Transpo in late 2023 for 51 similar buses. New Flyer has delivered over 1,100 buses to OC Transpo over the past 35 years. The new vehicles are 40-foot battery-electric models designed to reduce emissions and improve energy efficiency.

OC Transpo provides bus and rail services in Ottawa and parts of Gatineau. The electric buses ordered from New Flyer Industries Canada are intended to help OC Transpo reduce the environmental impact of its fleet and operate more sustainably.

The delivery of these vehicles is expected in 2026. With this latest order, the total number of Xcelsior CHARGE NG buses ordered to date is now 175. This order is a follow-up to a 2023 agreement between New Flyer and the Toronto Transit Commission.

The electric bus procurement is part of a broader strategy by OC Transpo to modernize services and reduce the environmental impact of its fleet. The new electric buses ordered from New Flyer Industries Canada are part of a larger modernization strategy by OC Transpo, aiming to support the transition toward low-emission public transport.

The financing of the procurement of these buses by New Flyer Industries Canada was supported by the Canadian government. This move demonstrates the government's commitment to promoting eco-friendly transportation solutions and reducing greenhouse gas emissions.

In conclusion, the order for 124 electric buses from New Flyer Industries Canada marks a significant step forward in OC Transpo's efforts to modernize its fleet and reduce its environmental footprint. The delivery of these vehicles in 2026 will undoubtedly contribute to a cleaner and more sustainable public transportation system in Ottawa and parts of Gatineau.
