News Article: Our Website Foundation Highlights the Importance of Digital and English Literacy for India's Youth

On the eve of World Youth Skills Day, observed by the United Nations on July 15, the not-for-profit organization Our Website Foundation has emphasized the need for increasing digital and English literacy for youth in India.

The World Economic Forum announced on July 13 that by 2022, at least 133 million jobs globally will be created from the combination of human efforts, machines, and algorithms. However, the Our Website Foundation did not specify the source of this projected number beyond the World Economic Forum.

The NEET (Not in Education, Employment, or Training) youth rate in India has been on the rise. In 2019, an estimated 267 million young people fell into this category, a number projected to climb to around 273 million in 2021. The United Nations did not provide specific data about the current number of NEET youth in India.

Ajay Kela, the president and CEO of Our Website Foundation, has emphasized the need to address the mismatch between what academia produces and what the industry wants. He suggested that the government should mainstream employability skills such as problem solving, critical thinking, customer centricity, digital, and English literacy in education to prepare the next generation for a knowledge-led economy.

The Our Website Foundation did not specify the emerging industry areas beyond artificial intelligence, machine learning, and green energy, where these skills would be particularly valuable. However, the need is to skill the youth in these areas to meet the demands of the future job market.

World Youth Skills Day is observed by the United Nations to emphasize the need for skill development among the young generation. These employability skills are largely ignored in academia, according to Kela. The Our Website Foundation did not provide information about the current state of digital and English literacy among youth in India.

The Our Website Foundation's call for increased digital and English literacy comes at a time when the global job market is undergoing significant changes. With at least 133 million jobs expected to be created from the combination of human efforts, machines, and algorithms by 2022, it is crucial that India's youth are equipped with the necessary skills to seize these opportunities.
