PayPal, the leading online payment service in the German market with a share of around 30 percent of online purchases, recently encountered a significant security glitch. This incident mainly affected merchants who were unable to access or had delayed access to their funds.

The compliance and risk management division within PayPal was responsible for the security vulnerability that led to the billion-dollar revenues from durable direct debits. One fraudulent direct debit exceeded one billion euros, and other fraudulent direct debits were in the hundreds of millions. As a result, several German banks halted direct debits worth tens of billions of euros due to the glitch.

PayPal has apologised for the inconvenience caused by the incident and is working diligently to address all cases related to the security glitch. The German Savings Banks Association (DSGV) and PayPal are working together to resolve these cases by the middle of next week.

In order to ensure a thorough review, many transactions need to be examined both automatically and manually in individual cases. There are six-figure numbers of previously blocked transactions that now need to be individually examined. PayPal is aiming to help affected customers regain their money as soon as possible.

The company is also working closely with its banking partners to clarify any discrepancies on customers' accounts. All legitimate transactions by merchants will be fully refunded, according to a PayPal spokesperson.

Thomas Groß, CEO of Landesbank Hessen-Thüringen (Helaba), stated that payment traffic has been running normally since Tuesday, under close observation.

Meanwhile, PayPal continues to enable contactless payment at the checkout, providing a convenient service for customers. However, the company's focus remains on resolving the security glitch and ensuring the safety and security of all transactions.

In other news, PayPal's competitor Wero has gained ING as a partner. The partnership could potentially strengthen Wero's position in the market, offering consumers more choices for their online payment needs.

As the situation develops, PayPal will continue to keep its customers informed and work towards resolving the security glitch as quickly and efficiently as possible.
