Frankfurt Airport to Get Pedestrian and Cyclist Bridge

Frankfurt Airport, one of Europe's busiest airports, is set to become more accessible for cyclists and pedestrians. The German federal government has announced that it will fund 75% of a five million euro project to construct a special bridge connecting the airport with the Gateway Gardens business district.

The Gateway Gardens business district and Frankfurt Airport are already centrally located and traffic-friendly, with connections via ICE and regional train stations, highways, bus terminal, and various roads. However, cyclists and pedestrians have faced difficulties finding a safe route through the airport due to ramps, tunnels, and exits.

Fraport, the airport operator, is addressing this issue by constructing a 76-meter bridge for direct pedestrian and cycling connection between Frankfurt Airport and the Gateway Gardens business district. The new bridge will feature wave-like exterior elements and eliminate the need for eight traffic lights.

The construction project includes the renovation of a tunnel under the A3 highway, scheduled for completion by early 2027. This initiative is part of Fraport's efforts to connect the Gateway Gardens business district to Frankfurt Airport, making it more convenient for the over 80,000 people who work there and the more than 60 million passengers who visit annually.

Many people commute to Frankfurt Airport by bicycle, particularly during warmer months, according to Fraport. The new bridge is expected to encourage more people to choose sustainable modes of transport.

The financial support for this innovative cycling project in Germany comes from the Federal Ministry of Transport under a guideline for promoting such projects. This move aligns with the federal government's commitment to promoting sustainable transportation and reducing carbon emissions.

With the construction of this bridge, Frankfurt Airport aims to set a new standard for accessibility and sustainability in air travel. The project is a testament to the city's commitment to creating a greener and more connected future.
