Werner Herzog Honoured at the 82nd Venice Film Festival

Werner Herzog, the esteemed German director and Hollywood legend, was presented with the Golden Lion for his lifetime achievements at the 82nd Venice Film Festival. The 86-year-old filmmaker, known for his unique and magnificent works, was honoured by none other than Francis Ford Coppola, the director of iconic films such as The Godfather and Apocalypse Now.

Born in Munich in 1942, Herzog has been a significant figure in international cinéma d'auteur and New German Cinema. His career spans various roles in the film industry, including directing, producing, acting, voice acting, and writing.

Ghost Elephants, a new documentary by Herzog, was shown at the festival outside the formal competition. The film, which follows a herd of elephants that have survived in the remote highlands of Angola, is a testament to Herzog's enduring passion for storytelling.

In his laudation for Herzog, Coppola connected the countries Angola and Italy, referencing Herzog's film about an elephant herd in Angola and alluding to Italy in the context of the festival and other presented films. Coppola stated that it's a fact worth celebrating that someone like Herzog can exist.

Herzog, in his speech of thanks, mentioned his positive relationship with the Venice Film Festival. In 2009, Time magazine included him in its list of the world's 100 most influential people.

The 82nd Venice Film Festival took place, with Ghost Elephants not part of the formal competition. Despite this, the documentary was met with praise for its unique and different approach to filmmaking, further solidifying Herzog's place as a master of the craft.
