Cleveland Guardians Battle Through Adversity in Pursuit of Playoffs

After a tumultuous season, the Cleveland Guardians are pushing forward, determined to secure a spot in the playoffs. With three weeks remaining in the American League (AL) season, the Guardians find themselves three games out of the wild card.

The team has faced significant challenges, most notably the absence of their star closer, Emmanuel Clase, and right-handed starter Luis Ortiz, who have been placed on the restricted list due to a gambling investigation. There is a possibility that both players could receive a lifetime ban, adding uncertainty to the Guardians' roster.

Despite these setbacks, the Guardians have shown remarkable resilience, winning four games in a row after a stretch of nine losses in 10 games. This recent surge has been propelled by the emergence of Cade Smith as the primary closer, with Smith securing a save in a 4-3 victory on Saturday night by retiring the last four batters.

The Guardians' offense, currently boasting the lowest batting average in the major leagues (.224), has not been the team's strongest suit. However, the team has been focusing on trusting their own strengths and staying within themselves without Clase, rather than trying to compensate for his absence.

Stephen Vogt, the current manager of the Guardians, has been instrumental in keeping the team focused. Vogt, who retired as a player just two years before taking the managerial role with the Guardians, was named AL Manager of the Year last year in his first season. He credits the resilience of the players for their ability to bounce back from setbacks throughout the season.

As the Guardians prepare for their next game against the Seattle Mariners on Sunday, they stand a chance to get even closer to the last wild card. If they win, they will be within two games of the Mariners, who currently hold the third wild card spot.

The Guardians are focused on playing in October, with a singular goal of making it to the playoffs this season. The road ahead may be challenging, but with their resilience and determination, the Cleveland Guardians are poised to make a strong push for the playoffs.
