Philippine young basketball team challenges Chinese Taipei
The Philippine Gilas Youth team is gearing up for the preliminary round of the FIBA U16 Asia Cup, scheduled to take place in Mongolia. The team, led by head coach LA Tenorio, has been training hard to secure a spot in the quarterfinals and improve upon their fourth place finish in the previous edition in Qatar.
The team's upcoming matches in the preliminary round include New Zealand and Indonesia. The Philippines will face Chinese Taipei in their first game on August 31, at Buyant Ukhaa Sport Complex in Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia. The game is scheduled for 7:00 PM local time.
Captain Prince Carino, one of the key players for Gilas Youth, along with forwards Gab Delos Reyes, Jeremiah Antolin, and Ethan Tan-Chi, Jhustin Hallare, and Travis Pascual, will lead the team in their quest for a ticket for the FIBA U17 World Cup in Turkey next year.
Recently, Andwele Cabanero, Everaigne Cruz, Jhello Lumague, John Restificar, Jolo Pascual, and Brian Orca have been added to the Gilas Youth roster, replacing Chris Miranda. These new additions are expected to provide valuable support to the team.
To qualify for the quarterfinals, the team needs to finish first in their group. If they finish second or third, they will need to participate in a crossover qualification match to reach the Top 8. The team qualified for the Asia Cup through their dominance in the SEABA qualifiers in May.
As the team prepares for their first game against Chinese Taipei, they are determined to give their best and secure a spot in the quarterfinals. The entire nation is behind them, cheering them on as they represent the Philippines in the FIBA U16 Asia Cup.
