PhysicsWallah Acquires Minority Equity in Sarrthi IAS Mentorship Platform
In a significant move, edtech unicorn PhysicsWallah (PW) has announced the acquisition of a 40 per cent stake in UPSC coaching institute Sarrthi IAS. This acquisition, according to a report published by Entrackr, is a strategic consolidation push in the UPSC preparation market.
Founded by Varun Jain and Dr. Shivin Chaudhry, Sarrthi IAS focuses on mentorship-driven UPSC preparation. The company offers courses such as GS Foundation, Mains modules, Prelims revision, and interview training. The acquisition will not only strengthen PhysicsWallah's presence in the civil services coaching market, covering UPSC as well as state-level public service exams, but also allow Sarrthi IAS to tap into PhysicsWallah's technology and infrastructure.
After the acquisition, Sarrthi IAS will continue to function independently. This move is expected to boost Sarrthi IAS's growth, as it aims to expand its reach and improve its offerings.
Meanwhile, PhysicsWallah, founded by Indian educator Alakh Pandey in 2016, has been on an upward trajectory. The company, which had previously explored larger acquisitions, including Drishti IAS, though those discussions did not move forward, has been successful in raising significant funding. It was valued at USD 2.8 billion in its latest funding round and has raised USD 312 million to date, including a USD 210 million Series B round.
In FY25, PhysicsWallah recorded a 55% year-on-year revenue growth to nearly INR 3,000 crore. Post-acquisition, the combined UPSC business revenue is projected to surpass INR 350 crore in FY26, and the company's losses shrank by almost 80% during the same period.
As PhysicsWallah prepares for its IPO, having received SEBI approval to file its DRHP, it is expected to raise around INR 4,500 crore through the listing. This acquisition of Sarrthi IAS is a strategic step towards further growth and consolidation in the edtech sector.
