Planned sports and entertainment venue in Hamburg
In the heart of Hamburg, Europe's largest inner-city development project, HafenCity, expansion is on the horizon. Bordering the Billebogen development, this new quarter is set to become a hub for sports, events, and commerce.
The proposed development, spanning over 75 hectares, aims to create a versatile space that will attract both local residents and visitors. The expression of interest procedure for further information can be found on hafencity.com, billebogen.de, and cruisegate-hamburg.de.
Currently, approximately 10,000 people live in around 4,900 apartments in the HafenCity. By the end of 2024, around 120 projects have been completed in this bustling area, which is expanding the city's downtown by about 40 percent.
The sports and events arena planned for the development will have approximately 8,000 seats. This arena, intended for volleyball competitions as part of Hamburg's Olympic bid, will be available to local professional sports teams, such as basketball and handball clubs, for at least 25 days a year.
Companies involved in the construction of the sports and event center in Hamburg-Billebogen include Hochtief, Ed. Züblin AG, and Strabag. Construction is expected to begin at the end of the 2020s, allowing operations to commence in the early 2030s.
The Billebogen development area, primarily commercially developed, focuses on research and development, innovation, sports, and culture. The arena is expected to be part of a wider quarter called Neuer Huckepackbahnhof, which will be offered for development by the Billebogen Development Company GmbH & Co. KG.
The Westfield Hamburg-Überseequartier, a complex of 14 buildings, is already a significant part of the HafenCity. It houses 130 shops, around 40 restaurants and cafes, 10 Kinopolis cinemas, three Accor hotels, and 579 apartments. On the southern grounds of the Überseequartier, the Cruise Center HafenCity has been created, offering berths for two ships with up to 1,800 passengers.
In the future, it is expected that 16,000 residents will live in around 8,000 apartments in the HafenCity. The bidding process for the sports and events arena will result in an "assignment" between the BBEG and the potential developer.
The HafenCity offers a mix of apartments, offices, shops, gastronomy, cultural, and recreational facilities, making it a vibrant and dynamic part of Hamburg's urban landscape. With the addition of the Billebogen development, this growth and vitality are set to continue, further enriching the city's downtown area.
