Zach Edey's Speeding Incident and NBA Rookie Success

Zach Edey, the rising star of the NBA, recently made headlines for a traffic violation, but his impressive rookie season with the Memphis Grizzlies has kept fans' attention.

On May 1, 2025, Edey was pulled over by the Tippecanoe County Sheriff's Office in Indiana for speeding. The police body cam footage, recently released by TMZ Sports, shows Edey driving 101 mph in a 55-mph zone. The officer immediately reprimanded him for speeding.

Edey attempted to explain that he sped up to pass a car in front of him, but the officer was uninterested in his excuses. The misdemeanor reckless driving charge against Edey was later dropped in exchange for a $639.50 fine. However, the officer continued to criticize Edey, stating that he shouldn't pass at 100 mph as the road has a speed limit of 55 mph.

Despite this setback, Edey's rookie season was a success. He was named to the NBA All-Rookie First Team and finished 17th in rebounds per game, 8th in offensive rebounds (232), 6th in offensive boards per game (3.5), and 20th in blocks (85) in the 2024-2025 season, according to Basketball Reference.

In 55 games with Memphis, Edey averaged 9.2 points, 8.3 rebounds, 1.0 assists, 1.3 blocks, and 21.5 minutes per contest. He shot 58% from the field, 34.6% from 3-point territory, and 70.9% at the foul line.

The incident occurred after the Grizzlies' season ended, with Memphis losing in five games to the Oklahoma City Thunder during the first round of the playoffs. Edey eventually handed over his license and registration to the officer.

This traffic violation was not the only challenge Edey faced during the 2024-2025 season. He trailed Stephon Castle (San Antonio Spurs), Zaccharie Risacher (Atlanta Hawks), Jaylen Wells (Grizzlies), and Alex Sarr (Washington Wizards) in Rookie of the Year voting.

Despite these obstacles, Edey remains a promising talent in the NBA. His speeding incident serves as a reminder for all drivers to obey traffic laws, but it does not diminish his accomplishments on the court.
