Demonstrator in Georgia claims police forced threats of sodomy and burial alive during incarceration

Police, during a detainment, allegedly threatened a Georgian protester with sodomy and burial alive.

In the heart of Tbilisi City Court, Rezo Kiknadze, an anti-government demonstrator, was recently sentenced to an undisclosed term in prison on criminal charges. Kiknadze has been a prominent figure in the ongoing protests in Georgia, which began on 28 November following the suspension of the country's EU membership bid by the Georgian Dream.

According to reports, Kiknadze was detained while returning home from a clinic appointment by men dressed in black inside a metro station. He was then taken to Lisi Lake in the northwest of Tbilisi, where he was allegedly pressured to give false testimony.

During his final statement, Kiknadze recounted several harrowing incidents. He was threatened with sexual violence by officers, beaten, and had his phone taken away. Officers also accused him of being supplied with fireworks and ordered to throw objects at the riot police. Kiknadze denied these charges and refused to write a statement the officers demanded from him.

The prosecution's evidence against Kiknadze includes a video and a forensic photo-analysis report, as stated in a report by the civil society organisation Georgian Democratic Initiative (GDI). Kiknadze was accused of participating in group violence, a crime punishable by up to six years in prison.

Archil Museliantsi, Kiknadze's lawyer, claimed that his client was pressured by the police to testify against opposition politicians. Kiknadze was also accused of attending protests on the instructions of opposition leaders and receiving payment for his participation. However, Kiknadze vehemently denied these allegations.

The latest wave of protests in Georgia has seen hundreds of people detained, including Kiknadze. The demonstrators' central demands include the release of detainees and calls for new parliamentary elections. The first phase of demonstrations was marked by brutal police violence against protesters and journalists.

As the situation in Georgia continues to unfold, the fate of Rezo Kiknadze and many others like him remains uncertain. The ongoing protests serve as a stark reminder of the ongoing struggle for democracy and the rule of law in the country.
