In the city of Essen, Germany, a robbery at a local supermarket on Schlossstraße, Bedingrade, has left investigators baffled. On the morning of July 20, 2023, an armed man committed a daring heist, and despite an immediate manhunt, the police were unable to catch him.
The suspect, described as a gray-haired man with a black cap, is approximately 50 years old and stands at around 1.75 meters tall with a normal build. He wore a gray pullover, dark gray jeans, a black cap, and work shoes during the robbery. The man has a distinctive scar in the right neck area and wears an electronic speech aid in the middle of his neck, which gives his voice a metallic sound.
The robbery took place at the "Discount Store" supermarket, where the man made a pretence of needing the toilet but was refused by an employee. Frustrated, he pulled out a black revolver and ordered the employees to lead him to the vault and open it. The man took three cash drawers from the vault, two of which he stored in a light gray backpack, and the third bounced onto the floor.
One of the employees managed to secretly take photos of the perpetrator as he fled the scene with approximately 2,500 euros on a black and white men's bicycle. The police published a public appeal describing the suspect later the same day, but so far, no leads have been forthcoming.
In a bid to generate new leads, the case is currently being showcased on TV. The broadcast of the case is on the ZDF show "Case File XY... ungelöst" on Wednesday (August 20, 8:15 p.m.). The police hope that the increased visibility will help them to identify the suspect and bring him to justice.
