Police officer in Ottawa faces disciplinary action for participating in sexual activities during working hours
In a recent development, Ottawa Police Constable Richard Lemay has been demoted for 12 months following an incident that occurred between October 1, 2008, and November 30, 2008. Lemay, who has been a member of the Ottawa Police Service since 2002, pleaded guilty to discreditable conduct, neglect of duty, and insubordination under the Police Services Act.
During the incident, Lemay was on duty and driving a marked police vehicle. He picked up a woman, who was a tenant in an apartment building where he responded to a disturbance. According to reports, Lemay and the woman exchanged text messages on several occasions before the incident.
The details of the incident escalated when Lemay engaged in sexual activity with the woman he had picked up. This behaviour was deemed inappropriate and unprofessional, leading to the charges against him.
At a hearing in July, Lemay apologised for his actions. He also expressed remorse to the victim, his family, and the Ottawa Police Service. As a result of his misconduct, Lemay will be demoted from First Class Constable to Second Class Constable for 12 months.
It's worth noting that there is no information available about a Constable Richard Lemay working at a police station since 2002, which could suggest a suspension or leave of absence during the investigation and subsequent proceedings.
This incident serves as a reminder of the high standards expected of police officers and the consequences of failing to uphold those standards. The Ottawa Police Service has reiterated its commitment to maintaining the trust and respect of the community it serves.
