Political upheaval encircles minister following controversy regarding the destiny of a Cambodian student
In a shocking turn of events, a 13-year-old Cambodian student in Surin province, Thailand, has found himself at the centre of a controversy that has sparked widespread outrage and condemnation. The boy, who was born and raised in Thailand, was recently arrested and faced the possibility of deportation.
The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has issued a statement strongly condemning the boy's arrest, expressing concern over the potential psychological trauma it could cause and the stripping of his educational rights and opportunities. The NHRC emphasized that as a party to the Convention on the Rights of the Child, Thailand should prioritize the best interests of the child and base his right to education on equal opportunity.
The student and his mother are currently under the care of the provincial Shelter for Children and Families in Surin province. Their immigration status, however, remains unclear. Until it is clarified, they will continue to be under the care of the Social Development and Human Security Ministry.
The boy's detention was allegedly due to an unidentified whistle-blower accusing his mother of entering Thailand illegally. A video of the boy being escorted to Bua Chet Police Station in his school uniform was shared by one of his teachers, sparking uproar among netizens.
In response to the incident, the Social Development and Human Security Minister, Varawut Silpa-archa, has ordered the Surin Human Security Emergency Management Centre and the Department of Children and Youth's Provincial Together Possible Team to investigate the matter. The minister also highlighted that the student is being treated according to Section 22 of the Convention on the Rights of the Child, which ensures appropriate protection and humanitarian assistance for refugee children.
It's important to note that the school's director, Kotchaporn Chumpetch, was not involved in the investigation or the boy's detention.
The identity of the whistleblower remains unknown, but the incident has raised questions about the treatment of migrant children in Thailand and the country's commitment to upholding the rights of children, as outlined in the Convention on the Rights of the Child.
