Politician Hofreiter calls for increased transparency in Ukraine's anti-corruption campaign - Politician Hofreiter from the Green party advocates for clearer action in Ukraine's anti-corruption efforts
In a recent interview, Anton Hofreiter, a member of the Bundestag, the German federal parliament, voiced his concerns about the current situation in Ukraine and its impact on the survival of Ukrainian democracy.
Hofreiter, who focuses on the independence of the Anti-Corruption Prosecutors in Ukraine, expressed his support for the independence of the National Anti-Corruption Bureau. He noted with concern the subordination of the National Anti-Corruption Bureau and Anti-Corruption Prosecutors to the General Prosecutor's Office in July, effectively ending their autonomy.
Ukrainian civil society, however, resisted President Volodymyr Zelensky and parts of parliament's attempt to hinder the independence of the National Anti-Corruption Bureau. A new law was signed by President Zelensky to restore the independence of these key institutions in Ukraine.
Hofreiter also discussed the possibility of deploying Western peacekeeping troops to Ukraine. He stated that Ukraine believes a lasting ceasefire with Russia would only be possible if Russia was already too weak to attack Western peacekeeping troops. Hofreiter expressed a desire for German troops to be part of any potential Western peacekeeping force in Ukraine.
The debate in Germany about peacekeeping troops in Ukraine, according to Hofreiter, is being led from the wrong end. He believes that the current situation in Ukraine affects the interests of other countries and that the survival of Ukrainian democracy is a concern that needs to be addressed.
Hofreiter's comments suggest a concern for the stability and security of Ukraine, as well as a desire to protect Ukrainian democracy. He also expressed concern about the actions of certain members of parliament in Ukraine, particularly those who want to keep a closer eye on Ukraine.
The interview focused primarily on the independence of the Anti-Corruption Prosecutors in Ukraine. Hofreiter's comments come at a time when a group of parliamentarians, including Max Lucks and Timon Dzienus, are advocating for stronger support and monitoring regarding Ukraine's situation, particularly around issues such as corruption and military aid.
