Pope declares August 22 as a day for prayer and fasting, aiming for peace in Ukraine and the Holy Land
Pope Leo XIV Calls for Peace and Justice in Ukraine and the Holy Land
Pope Leo XIV has returned to the Vatican after his second stay at Castel Gandolfini, expressing gratitude for the reception he has received. During his time away, the Pope has been actively engaged in international political matters, particularly focusing on the ongoing conflicts in Ukraine and the Holy Land.
In a public address, Pope Leo XIV called upon the Lord to grant peace and justice, and to dry the tears of those who suffer because of armed conflicts. He specifically mentioned Ukraine and the Holy Land as areas of deep concern. The Pope did not make any concrete references to specific political leaders in relation to the Ukraine conflict, but he did express hope about new diplomatic moves aimed at ending Russia's war on Ukraine.
Regarding the situation in the Holy Land, the Pope expressed his concern for the people in the Gaza Strip, stating that he has lost contact with the only Catholic parish there following Israeli evacuation orders.
In response to questions from reporters, the Pope confirmed that he has communicated with some leaders from time to time, but did not confirm if he speaks with U.S. President Donald Trump. When asked about the meeting between President Trump and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, the Pope stated that he had not heard from any leaders following the meeting.
The Pope also marked the 100th day of his papacy on August 16, acknowledging that much work remains to be done to end the war in Ukraine. He urged everyone to continue to work hard, pray hard, and seek the way forward.
In a bid to rally support for peace, Pope Leo XIV has asked Catholics to observe August 22 as a day of prayer and fasting for peace and justice. The church will also celebrate the feast of the Queenship of Mary on August 22.
As the world continues to be wounded by wars in various regions, including the Holy Land and Ukraine, the Pope emphasised the need for dialogue and diplomacy to resolve these conflicts. He also expressed that it is a grace to be at Castel Gandolfini and a blessing from God to serve as Pope Leo XIV.
