Pope Leo XIV grants a unique moment to an Indiana couple as they seek and receive his blessing for their newborn baby
In the heart of Rome, a memorable moment unfolded for Dr. Brandon and Dr. Arielle Brown from SS. Peter and Paul Cathedral Parish in Indianapolis. On May 21, they attended Pope Leo XIV's first general audience at the Vatican, hoping to have their 6-week-old daughter, Laurence, receive a blessing from the pope.
The journey to this significant event was not without its challenges. Upon arriving at the plaza in front of St. Peter's Basilica three hours before the audience, the Browns were already surrounded by several thousand people. Navigating through the lines and security was no easy feat, but seating areas were opened one at a time.
Father Rory Hanly, rector of the Basilica of San Silvestro in Rome, played a pivotal role in the Brown family's experience. He arranged for them to get into the audience and offered valuable advice for making the most of the experience. Father Hanly suggested that Dr. Brandon should hold out their baby as far as possible, as Pope Leo doesn't walk along the route, but rides, and his security walks alongside the car.
With the help of a Swiss Guard, the Browns managed to get into an area close to the pope's route. As the moment approached, Arielle felt her heart explode with the realization that Laurence might also receive a blessing. And when the pope stopped to bless the first baby, her hopes soared even higher.
When it was their turn, Pope Leo took a little extra time with Laurence during the blessing. A security guard eventually took Laurence from Arielle, and she felt an overwhelming peace when she saw the pope pull him up. Arielle felt God's presence after the pope blessed Laurence, and she believes the week in Rome was a joyful mystery, reminding her of God's work in people's lives.
After the audience, the Browns shared their memories with their step-children, and the older children were positive about the trip to Rome with Laurence. The couple was also fortunate to visit the Basilica of San Lorenzo fuori le Mura during their trip.
Fathers Martin Beck and Heinrich Ebach, Pallottine priests in Rome, were instrumental in facilitating the Brown family's audience with Pope Leo XIV and Laurence's blessing. Arielle feels a sense of safety and peace in the Lord's arms, knowing that he is keeping his church and them in his care.
Pope Leo XIV seemed surprised by the young age of Laurence, as he had previously blessed older babies. Nevertheless, the moment was a truly special one for the Brown family, a memory they will cherish forever.
