Porsche Unveils Factory-Integrated Wireless Charging for Electric Vehicles

Porsche is set to make waves in the electric vehicle (EV) industry by introducing factory-integrated wireless charging technology. The German automaker will debut this groundbreaking innovation with the upcoming electric Cayenne, scheduled for release at the end of 2025, with deliveries beginning in 2026.

The wireless charging system, named Porsche Wireless Charging, uses an inductive floor plate to transfer up to 11 kW of power to a charging coil installed in the underbody of the vehicle. This technology promises an efficiency rate of up to 90 percent, comparable to conventional wired AC charging.

The wireless charging setup will be offered as a paid option on the Cayenne Electric. Owners can park their Cayenne over the charging pad, and the car automatically lowers itself to optimize alignment for charging. The charging process begins without the need for plugging in.

Safety features include a motion detector, foreign object detection, and automatic shut-off if interference is detected. These measures ensure a secure and hassle-free charging experience for the vehicle's owners.

Through the My Porsche app, owners can monitor and control charging sessions. Features available in the app include departure timers, cabin preconditioning, and integration into the Surround View parking system.

Porsche will initially introduce the wireless charging technology at the IAA Mobility show in Munich this weekend. The company presents this technology with the new electric Cayenne as one of the first automakers to offer wireless charging for electric vehicles.

Initially, the technology will roll out in Europe in 2026, with other markets to follow. However, no specific other markets or partners for initial rollout outside Europe were mentioned in the available information.

Tesla has teased a wireless charging station, but has yet to announce plans to bring it to market. Porsche's move into wireless charging technology solidifies its position as a leader in the EV industry.

The charging pad weighs approximately 50 kilograms (110 pounds) and is equipped with both WiFi and LTE for over-the-air (OTA) software updates. Porsche's "one-box" approach integrates all necessary electronics into the charging pad itself, requiring only a supply cable and no separate wall unit or control hardware.

This development marks a significant step forward in the EV industry, making charging more convenient and efficient for Porsche owners. The electric Cayenne will be the first vehicle to benefit from this new wireless charging technology.
