Portuguese Championship: Fourth Round Recap and Upcoming Matches
The fourth round of the Portuguese Championship has begun, with some exciting matches already underway. Let's take a look at the highlights from the weekend so far.
In a surprising turn of events, Vasco Botelho da Costa's team, Moreirense, lost their invincibility at home to Gil Vicente. Pablo opened the scoring at the start of the second half, with Gustavo Varela scoring his first I Liga goal for Gil Vicente later in the match, securing a 2-0 victory.
Meanwhile, in another closely contested match, Gil Vicente was defeated by FamalicĂŁo. Justin de Haas scored the opening goal for FamalicĂŁo, securing a 0-1 victory for the team currently leading the Portuguese championship, albeit conditionally due to VitĂłria SC dropping more points.
The first Classic of the 2025/26 season between Sporting and FC Porto will take place at José Alvalade Stadium on Saturday at 20:30 (Continental Portugal time). The first half ended in a 0-0 draw, with Luuk de Jong scoring the first goal for FC Porto in the second half. An own goal by Nehuen Pérez increased the score to 1-0, but Djouahra equalized the game with a header goal, leaving the score at 1-1 as of this writing.
Gabri Veiga will not be an option for Francesco Farioli in the game against Sporting due to an acute lumbar pain episode.
Saturday will also see multiple matches, including a big game at Alvalade between Sporting and FC Porto. Moreirense travels to Barcelos to play Gil Vicente in the round opener. Tondela hosts Estoril, and Rio Ave-Sporting de Braga and Santa Clara-Estrela da Amadora are scheduled for Sunday evening.
Nacional secured their first three points in the I Liga by beating Casa Pia in Rio Maior, with Paulinho Boia and Chuchu RamĂrez scoring the goals.
The AVS-FamalicĂŁo and VitĂłria SC-Arouca matches have kicked off. The only game with goals so far is the one taking place in GuimarĂŁes, where Gustavo Silva kicked off the scoring with a bicycle kick, only for Djouahra to equalize with a header goal.
