Portugal retires Diogo Jota's No. 21 jersey and assigns it to Ruben Neves in an emotional tribute.

In a poignant display of respect and camaraderie, Brighton midfielder James Milner is wearing the number 20 shirt this season as a symbolic gesture for Diogo Jota, a former team-mate who tragically passed away in July at the age of 28 following a car crash in northern Spain.

The number 20 shirt has been retired by Liverpool, Jota's former club, in his honour. This decision was made after consulting with Jota's wife, Rute Cardoso, and family, ensuring that the tribute was a fitting and heartfelt gesture.

Jota's younger brother, André Silva, also passed away in the same car crash at the age of 25. The loss of both brothers has left a deep void in the Portuguese football community.

Portugal manager Roberto Martinez has paid tribute to Jota's enduring influence on the team, stating that he will be honoured every day and will be another force helping them achieve their goals. Ruben Neves, a close friend of Jota who played with him at Wolves and for the national team, was one of the pallbearers at Jota's funeral.

In a moving moment during the Nations League final against Spain, Jota came off the bench to join his team-mates. Portugal went on to win the match in a penalty shootout, with Ruben Neves scoring the decisive spot-kick.

Martinez has decided to give the number 21 jersey to Ruben Neves to honour his close relationship with Jota. Neves will wear the number 21 shirt for Portugal, previously worn by Jota.

Alexander Isak, who recently joined Liverpool, has inherited the Liverpool jersey number 20 as part of his transfer to the club.

As Portugal prepares for World Cup qualifying games against Armenia and Hungary, the team will gather for their first training camp without Jota next week. This marks a new chapter for the team, who recently lifted the Nations League trophy.

The loss of Diogo Jota has left a profound impact on the Portuguese football community, but his spirit lives on in the hearts of his team-mates and fans. His memory will continue to inspire them as they strive for success on the pitch.
